Introduction:
This year every student in Science 9 will be responsible for completing a major project that illustrates a topic, issue, or idea they wish to explore. This is an individual project, and work will be completed according to a scheduled timeline to assist students with managing deadlines for a large project.
Students have all previously selected the grade weights for this project, with regards to what percentage of their overall average that it will be worth. The teacher must approve all projects in advance, and students will be discouraged from changing topic midway through the process. Some class time will be set aside for project work, but the expectation is that much of the preparation will be done at home. Students will present their completed projects to the class during our class Mini-Fair (see dates in schedule).
After discussion with my students, it has been made apparent that a large majority of them would prefer to have choices and options with regards to the type of major project that they submit for this course. The SSRSB encourages students to participate in District and School wide Science Fairs at the Junior High level. Not all students wish to take part in this activity, but all are required to complete a major project within their Science course this year.

Rationale: Science, Technology, Society and The Environment!
One of the main objectives in the Junior High Science Curriculum is what is called "STSE". It is expected that "...Students will develop an understanding of the nature of science and technology, of the relationships between science and technology, and of the social and environmental contexts of science and technology."
The main theme of this project will be to encourage students to dig deeper into scientific ideas, discoveries, and theories in order to make connections between the science itself, the technology that it creates or requires, the people that make use of that technology and theory, as well as its broader impact on society and the environment.
